Rockfest

What is your first thought-- old washed up hair bands, AC/DC,  Aerosmith, Iron Maiden????  No,  Rockfest is latest project on the old Fly Farm.    I have been accumulating large stones  since we moved in last December and last week we started to make a water crossing in our stream and also buiding a wall to reduce erosion into our yard.  This is incredibly good excercise for the hips and legs.  Although my back and hands are sore, it is pretty good exercise for strength building. We built the crossing to get our mower to the meadow which we mow and have a garden of pumpkins, squash and sweet potatoes.  The first really hard rain we let us know how well we did, this stream can raise 8 feet in level quite quickly.   But today, it looks pretty good as the water tumbles over the rocks.

We had a chance to do some research at the local library on our house.  It was built in 1880 by the Gray Family and later purchased from them by the Jones family.   The Fly family was the third owners but must have been more connected in the community.  He was judge and she was a teacher.  They eventually moved to Florida because the winters were too harsh!!  They heated with coal, hard to believe they could not keep the place warm.

I was in Tulsa this week and I did get back on time--thank you Southwest Airlines.  I ran two days on a very nice high school track in Catoosa.  The first session, I ran two 300 meters at 54 seconds to get some good work with pacing and did some 100 m on the grass football field.   They also have bleachers that have great steps to run, 60 steps to the top.  I work on hitting each one and making quick controlled foot movements.   The second session was in the evening and it was already dark.  The weather was cool and dry.    I has rained a lot in OK this session and the rivers are full and the fields are green.  In contrast, last season it was brown stubble and sand bars. Getting to the track while it is dry has been at a premium due to the rain.  I ran a mile--which is a feat for sprinters, 800 m, 300m, 200 m in that order.  I was around 8 minutes for the mile, under 4 minutes for the 800 and I ran a pace for the the others.  It was great work out and something I will repeat.  It was great on the heart and still left the legs with some juice.

Linda and I went to the joint surgeon this week and she has scheduled a new knee in late October.   Once she gets out of the hospital, my role will be the basic caregiver as she recovers.  The knee is pretty bad and the pain it inflicts is not improving, I think she will be really happy with her leg tune up.   I am planning on taking off 6 weeks from work using the FMLA.    Hopefully she comes through the procedure without any issues and recovery is quick and complete.    In the mean time, she will be working on leg strength to speed the recovery.  Now that she does not have to worry about using up the old knee, she can do some more aggressive workouts to build leg strength.

Really Important Information

I participated in the USATF Masters Indoor National meet last weekend in Winston-Salem, NC.   It was good meet for me and I will add the details of the results in another post later this week.  What I want to reflect on here is the quality of people in that building.   I am just so impressed with the high level of competition and caring for each other that goes on for 3 days.  Hug and Cry Area for Awards  There were around 1000 competitors for the event, and with families and officials, generally 500 to 2000 people were in the building during the times the track was open. It was not completely full at JDL Fast Track, but a really good crowd. North Carolina passed some very hateful and just plain repressive legislation a few years back concerning rest room usage and anything that did not meet the "hateful Jesus" religion that they were  promoting.   The NBA pushed back and moved their All Star Game location and I think this may hav...

District Qualifier

Last Saturday the Greater Nashville Senior Games District Qualifier was ran at Brentwood High School Track.  I ran in the 4 sprints and took three gold and a silver medal.  Overall it was great event for me.  I ran in a new class, the 60 to 64 year old class.  I am actually 58, but in Olympian years I am 59 and next year, when they run the state meet for which we qualified, I will be 60 in Olympian years--confused, that is OK.  Kinda messy to figure your Olympian age.   I wore pinks sleeves the first three races because I was chilly after I got sweaty warming up around 8:30 AM.  I also wore the pink sleeves to celebrate those who have battled breast cancer and won.  Breast cancer has got to be an absolutely horrible way to be tortured by cancer.  I posted the picture of my sleeve and medals on Facebook and one of my high school class mates responded that she had been a 10 year survivor--- I nearly cried.  ...

Setbacks

Setbacks are part of life and we generally have no choice but to accept them in style.  I was in Wisconsin this week presenting some material to a large group of tissue makers.  Normally, you are subjected to hotel food and eating in groups.    I try as much as I can to be strict on my diet due to my garlic allergy and restrictions from gout when traveling.  I must have either goofed up or had something slip by, but I got a major case of food poisoning Monday night.  As I get older, the food poisoning symptoms and reaction becomes more severe and lingers much longer.   I got sick--the messy part- Monday night late and was finished with that deal by Tuesday morning.  But all day Tuesday and into Wednesday my body was trashed.  Tuesday was stay in bed basically all day.  I did leave the hotel twice for visits to the local store for some food and liquids.  Getting out of bed and to the car was a major task and quite le...
