Fathers Day and June

Our grand daughter visited last weekend --Fathers Day-- with her Moms and we had a great time with June.  BUT, she will wear you out. She takes two naps during the day and she is up at 5:00 AM sharp-- ready to go.  Just hang on from there, she like to drive the bus really fast.

Linda and I were both just exhausted after two full days and three nights with June in the house.  We need to get in better shape for this stuff.  It was worth it, she is just the sweetest thing ever!  She loved playing in the creek with a bucket, some sticks and of course a dinosaur floating in the bucket.  I think it was some soup starter.   We see her again in two weeks!!  Grandma made cookies for June  and a banana crème pie for Fathers Day along with a killer pot roast and we just had a great time.  That was a fantastic Fathers Day treat with June, Linsi, Betty and Bruce the pug in town as well.

The week after the Southeast Regional meet I was in NY state and was doing some speed work and got a cramp/ tweak in my left calf.  Similar to the calf issue I had a Baton Rouge, but not as bad.  I iced it right away and had some swelling in the soleus muscle under the outer calf muscle.  I did nurse it for about a week and after 10 days it was pretty good shape again.  I think I am healed but I will be using KT tape to see if I can avoid another occurrence.

I have been working on high jumping, javelin and also rounded up a 5 kg shot and 1 kg discus to begin work towards some pentathlon competitions next year.  As I move up in my age group, I want to work on some other events that need more technique rather than raw speed.  The pentathlon for the indoors and outdoors are very different in terms of events and I am going to play with them all and see if I can get competitive in at least the indoor events.  This season I am going to high jump in the Senior Games state meet this weekend.  I have done a fair amount of training for the jumps and hopefully it will pay off.     I might as well stay busy at the big meets and have some more fun.

My training has been pretty good leading up to the meet this weekend.  My mental state is about as good as it has been for a long time and that is really huge.   My times earlier in the season are competitive nationally and now I need to deliver with a great effort this weekend.  HJ Friday afternoon,  400 Saturday morning, 100 Saturday evening, 50 early Sunday and 200 closes the meet on Sunday afternoon.  Good spacing for resting, but it is still a lot of hanging around a hot track and just the strain of the heat and waiting, but that is where the mental strength pays off--just go do it!
She is just too sweet to be true!

First Time Ever?

Things are just a little crazy with the chaos associated with the coronavirus and the global reaction.   Talking with my wife and brother, as well as the rest of the world that will still chat with you, nobody can remember anything quite like this situation.   The crash into the Twin Towers on 9-11 had some elements of the situation, but the total shutdown of sporting events, meetings, global travel and the run on water, sanitizer and toilet paper is just totally new to us.  The Master Indoors meet was cancelled this week, I was not planning on going this year.   I am in the middle of relocation from Nashville to Harper Ferry , West Virginia.  On March 31 we will close on the Brentwood house and close on the new place on April 2.   Getting this into place has been a real battle, but it is going to happen.    We are on our third contract for the Brentwood house and after trying to sell it for 9 or 10 months it will close this ...

Recovery. One More Time

It has been about 10 weeks since I pinched the nerve in my back causing the muscle control issue in my right quad.   I am seeing my chiro twice a week for treatment and we are gaining on the process--s. l. o. w  l.  y.   I did visit my regular doctor who prescribed some steroids and also discussed some surgery technics.  I took the steroids and was superman for 4 days and but I wrote her a note about the other procedures and told her I would wait for Fall until thinking about that stuff.   I want to run out the chiro work first.   He said it could be up to 9 months for a full recovery and I got the time.    I am making progress, my lower leg buzzy feeling on my right side is basically gone.   But the quad control is still muted, with an occasional problem with my right leg just giving away for a split second and then I catch myself and keeping on trucking. Those occurrences are becoming less and less. ...

The Aging Process

As you get older, you understand the aging process from first hand knowledge, your body lets you know you are aging through its queues and hints.   Sometimes it is subtle and other times it is sudden.  On April 4, 2024 I received a  queue from my body concerning my back.      I had severe pain in my right leg and lost about half of the strength and function in the leg--just like a door had shut.  Bam!  I could not really walk, had a miserable time getting comfortable and could not sleep worth a damn.   Life had changed very suddenly for me.    The message was delivered on a Friday and I got to my chiro-- a Cox Technique Chiro- on Monday and he started the procedure to decompress my L 4 vertebra which had a disk that had collapsed and was pinching a nerve causing the loss of muscle control and strength in my right outer leg.   Inner leg was good, as was my left leg.  I also have nerve related feelings i...
