The Boonies

You know you are in the boonies when you have a hotel with a real key made of metal and your choices for a gym or helath club are a 45 minute drive.  This is the case for me this week in really Upstate New York.   Canada is less than an hour away.   I am working on another Yankee project and actually may return again next week.

I have started during my fitness runs on the treadmill, working on my heart rate.   I have been doing 800 meters at 8:00 min/mile pace and I can get two in before I reach my max heart rate.   Progress is being made.  After that, I will run a quicker pace until my heart rate races max again, typically that distance is 400 to 600 meters.   It was almost warm enough last weekend to go outside and do some running, but the wind was quite strong and shifting and I would rather spend time concentrating on controlling my heart rate than worrying about my hamstring or other leg muscles.   speaking of the hammie, I have been working diligently on the stretching, but I have a ways to go.  The legs are quite tight and it will take some serious work in warm weahter to get the gams loosen up and ready for speed.

I have also started to restrict my calorie intake to get the weight down.  I want to get below 200 pounds by the last of February.  Once I can get outdoors, I want to be in the 190's and ready to get some serious work done.   I have started to restirct my beer intake and on many days i just eliminate the brews.  They taste great and are refreshing after a work out, but I am going to see if I can help my weight loss by cutting down.

The registration is now open for the Nationals.  I am going to register for the 50, 200 and 400 meter events.  The 100 I can't win in the state meets, so  why register?  Which ones I actually run  , that will a decision to be made in July when I have some times recorded and can look closely at the actual schedule of events.

This boonies business makes it hard to get any real work done.  I may have to make some road trips for training.

Really Important Information

I participated in the USATF Masters Indoor National meet last weekend in Winston-Salem, NC.   It was good meet for me and I will add the details of the results in another post later this week.  What I want to reflect on here is the quality of people in that building.   I am just so impressed with the high level of competition and caring for each other that goes on for 3 days.  Hug and Cry Area for Awards  There were around 1000 competitors for the event, and with families and officials, generally 500 to 2000 people were in the building during the times the track was open. It was not completely full at JDL Fast Track, but a really good crowd. North Carolina passed some very hateful and just plain repressive legislation a few years back concerning rest room usage and anything that did not meet the "hateful Jesus" religion that they were  promoting.   The NBA pushed back and moved their All Star Game location and I think this may hav...

First Time Ever?

Things are just a little crazy with the chaos associated with the coronavirus and the global reaction.   Talking with my wife and brother, as well as the rest of the world that will still chat with you, nobody can remember anything quite like this situation.   The crash into the Twin Towers on 9-11 had some elements of the situation, but the total shutdown of sporting events, meetings, global travel and the run on water, sanitizer and toilet paper is just totally new to us.  The Master Indoors meet was cancelled this week, I was not planning on going this year.   I am in the middle of relocation from Nashville to Harper Ferry , West Virginia.  On March 31 we will close on the Brentwood house and close on the new place on April 2.   Getting this into place has been a real battle, but it is going to happen.    We are on our third contract for the Brentwood house and after trying to sell it for 9 or 10 months it will close this ...

Race Day Again

Finally, we get to race again! As many of you know, I was injured last April 4, 2024. I had a disk at L4 vertebra collapse and pinch a nerve in my back that caused over half of my lower leg strenth to disappear. I had a lot of atrophy in my right leg quad and I have been recovering ever since. I am close to 100% on strength and the right leg looks like it is very close to normal size again, but it has been a battle. I have been working in the gym, doing pilates again and also running. All of these things must be done in balance so you can get the proper rest and recover. I still do full body massages every two weeks and I also have been working with a Cox Technique Chiro since the injury on a weekly or biweekly basis. The chiro has gotten me stretched back out and the pressure off the nerve, that treatment has been the real source of healing in my opinion. MY normal doctor was not any help, but this is not what normal doctors do--naturally healing. The first meet of 202...
