Working and Running

After I finished the National meet I hustled home, changed my luggage and headed to Miami Beach for the 2018 Tissue World trade show.   I had a busy week with meeting on Monday and Tuesday with a volunteer peer technical group in which I am a leader.
The martini shown is a Frescatini available at the Grill Fish on Collins Avenue and it a cucumber based martini that is just incredibly delicious.  If you are in South Beach--skip Ocean Blvd and head for this place.  The staff is fantastic and the food and service is top shelf.  This visit is always a trip highlight!
Then on Wednesday through Friday I was involved in the shows.   A very busy week of meetings and greetings.

I dragged my carcass home on Friday to get some rest with three days at home scheduled.    I was shot from no rest and constant travel all over the Eastern time zone.   But, on Sunday I started to get sick and by Monday was headed to the doctor to see what was going on with my head and chest.  I was getting a massive headache and my lungs hurt from a hacking cough.   They doctor checked me for flu and that was negative and gave me some antibiotics to see if they could help.  I am improving but I am far from back to anything near normal energy.   My personal  prognosis is walking pneumonia which I have gotten a couple of times when my lungs were under duress.   I developed walking pneumonia in Phoenix when I was caught in a dust storm and I really think the low humidity at the National meet set off this attack.  I am adjusted to high humidity--50% + and in the building at Landover the humidity hovered in the teens!   That low amount of humidity was just too much for me to handle and I also struggled to stay hydrated.  As matter of fact, I doubt if I was hydrated all weekend. The lack of rest was also a major contributor, but I had work commitments as well and I need to get paid.  I have not been working all week due to fever and a very limited amount of energy in which to make my brain operate.  It has been a shitty week.

During the big meets Dave Albo and his staff take professional quality pictures of the competition.  I already have two pictures of his and purchased another from this meet.   He has a shot of me in the 4 x 400 handing off to Charlie Powell with the lead in the second heat. Check out Daves stuff, just search him on Google and his work will come up.
This shot is of David Schmanski bringing home the baton for the Gold!!

Another item I would like to promote is a book by Grady Cash to help the racers and runners to stay healthy and be more competitive in the Masters racing world.  He wrote a book that is available on Amazon and is great read to give you ideas for training and gear. I have a couple copies and it has been helpful in the shoe department.  Check it out.

Jump Ahead

Hello to all the faithful readers out there is the ethernet.  As you know, I have been dealing with an issue with a pinched nerve in my back that has been affecting my right leg strength.  My leg strength is back to 85% according to the squat machine at the gym.  I use the type of machine that has belt around your waist and you hook up to an arm that connections to the weight rack. This machine does no put any weight on my lower back and allows for leg strength development.  Progress has been made and I am also running a couple days a week at the Pettit Ice Center in West Allis as well.   Things are coming along.    About 6 weeks ago I began doing weekly pilates classes.   The pilates has been very helpful in generating flexibility and strength in  my lower body.   The sessions are around one hour and they are very intense and I am enjoying the improvement in my body strength and movement. I plan on continuing these ...

Really Important Information

I participated in the USATF Masters Indoor National meet last weekend in Winston-Salem, NC.   It was good meet for me and I will add the details of the results in another post later this week.  What I want to reflect on here is the quality of people in that building.   I am just so impressed with the high level of competition and caring for each other that goes on for 3 days.  Hug and Cry Area for Awards  There were around 1000 competitors for the event, and with families and officials, generally 500 to 2000 people were in the building during the times the track was open. It was not completely full at JDL Fast Track, but a really good crowd. North Carolina passed some very hateful and just plain repressive legislation a few years back concerning rest room usage and anything that did not meet the "hateful Jesus" religion that they were  promoting.   The NBA pushed back and moved their All Star Game location and I think this may hav...

Race Day Again

Finally, we get to race again! As many of you know, I was injured last April 4, 2024. I had a disk at L4 vertebra collapse and pinch a nerve in my back that caused over half of my lower leg strenth to disappear. I had a lot of atrophy in my right leg quad and I have been recovering ever since. I am close to 100% on strength and the right leg looks like it is very close to normal size again, but it has been a battle. I have been working in the gym, doing pilates again and also running. All of these things must be done in balance so you can get the proper rest and recover. I still do full body massages every two weeks and I also have been working with a Cox Technique Chiro since the injury on a weekly or biweekly basis. The chiro has gotten me stretched back out and the pressure off the nerve, that treatment has been the real source of healing in my opinion. MY normal doctor was not any help, but this is not what normal doctors do--naturally healing. The first meet of 202...
